A small port until the first Opium War, Shanghai soon was bustling with British and European trade as part of the Treaty of Nanjing. The end of the first Sino-Japanese War added Japanese interests. With a minority population of foreigners controlling more than half of the industry, Shanghai offered opportunity for all—both legitimate and illicit.
